Thug Life Songs

For the past week, I’ve been listening to Thug Life songs on loop.

Not surprising, considering how good the songs are and I know I’m not alone!

But for me, it feels a little extra special. It’s actually a big deal. Here’s why:

One, after a long, long time, I’m actually listening to music again.

There was a time, I would always be listening to music, When I am walking, travelling, working and eating. It was always there.

But in the past few years? Nothing. I barely listened to any songs at all.

Worse, I didn’t even like the new songs  that came out.

I’d started to wonder—have I lost the ability to enjoy music?

Had I become too mechanical?

Two, I’m listening to an entire movie album. All the songs.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I liked every song from one album. 

A few other reflections:

This whole thing reminded me of an old aphorism:

Nature abhors a vacuum. No one is truly indispensable. Life finds a way to fill the gaps.

For a long time, Mani Ratnam collaborated with Vairamuthu.

But post-#MeToo, Mani stopped working with him.

I used to wonder,how will the magic continue?

Who could ever fill those shoes?

(Not always the case, though. Director Shankar, for instance, hasn’t quite found his rhythm since Sujatha passed—especially when it comes to screenplay and dialogue. I also feel that, other than Anand and maybe Thani Oruvan, most didn’t fully leverage the Suba duo the way they could’ve.)

But I have to say,the lyrics in Thug Life are just… wonderful.

And I’m more of a lyrics guy than a music or voice person.

Speaking of voices the performance of Chinmayi in audio launch.

As I said, I usually can’t distinguish between voices or appreciate the finer nuances.

But even to someone like me, the difference between Dhee’s and Chinmayi’s versions of the same song is like day and night.

Beyond the music, I’m genuinely amazed by the promotional efforts from Kamal and Mani.

Whether the movie is a success or not, I respect the sheer commitment and the love they show for the craft.

(And that’s what really triggered these thoughts on how incredibly blessed these people are to have fallen in love with their craft, and to keep doing what they love, decade after decade.)

You Can Be Anything You Want to Be (Even a Poet, Apparently)!

My ambitions are… let’s just say, not lacking in range. I want to do a bit of everything. But I also like to think I’m practical—no wild dreams of becoming an astronaut or taming dragons (not yet, anyway).

For example, I want to write more books. I’m already a published author, so that’s not a stretch. Feels like adding another dish to a menu I already know how to cook.

I also want to write lyrics for movies. I’ve written poems, so lyrics feel like poems with better PR and a musical agent. With the right effort and a few coffees with the right people—why not?

In short, I’ve always felt I could explore any creative pursuit.

But there was one thing I firmly believed was not my cup of tea (or coffee): writing English poems.

Until today.

Okay, to be honest—I still can’t. Not the “sit under a tree with a quill and tortured soul” kind of poetry. But with a little help… I can fake it till I make it.

So I took a blog post I wrote and handed it over to ChatGPT. Told it: “Be concise, fix grammar, but don’t kill the vibe.” It came back all neat and polished—like my writing had gone to boarding school. I wasn’t thrilled.

But then I said, “Let’s try something fun. Turn it into a poem.”

And voila! A poem. Co-written by me and ChatGPT. Okay, mostly ChatGPT. But I had the idea, and that counts, right?

Here it is:

Blessed are those who find their way,

Early in life, and walk it each day.

Blessed are those who live on their terms,

Unshaken by worry, untouched by storms.

Blessed are those with hearts at peace,

Content in their journey, needing no release.

Moral of the story?

In the age of AI, you can literally be anything—even a poet. Just ask nicely.

 Blessed are those who figure out what they want to do with their life, very early on in their life and actually get to do it for their entire life

Blessed are those, who get to do what they want to do when they want to do without any worry. 

Blessed are those who are content with their life.

Made in Heaven! Made in India

I do watch an insane amount of TV series. At least, that is what people tell me.

If someone asks me, why do you waste time, I tell them, "Well, one day I want to create a TV series". I did have an option to write for Tamil TV series and I passed it on and nowadays, I sometimes do regret about it. Some people ask me, "Where do you find time?" I tell them, I am good at managing time and some poor souls do actually believe that. Sometimes, I do think that I am just making up for the lost time of lack of TV during my childhood.

I have been amazed by few of the TV series. Say West Wing (US), Bodyguard (UK), Sniffer (Russian), Silver Spoon (Russian), Money Heist (Spanish), Pine Gap (Australian) Bordertown (Finnish). (I could recommend a lot more)

Now to contrary opinion of what my friends think, I must admit and disclose that I really do not watch a lot of TV shows. The very few Indian TV shows, I have seen, I really did not like them. I have always wondered when will we have a good Indian TV show!? I have also felt, Netflix and Amazon both alike can’t figure out a good native content strategy for India. Now say, hello to Made in Heaven by Amazon!

The episode descriptions of Made in Heaven are highly misleading and there lies its beauty. They don't do any justice to the show! The episode titles are more about what happens in the life of the lead characters in that episode than it is about the marriage that the episode focuses on.

It also touches and talks about a lot of social issues in subtle yet powerful ways. say for e.g in one episode where workers don't take orders from a woman or where a plumber, a minority shareholder schools a blue-blooded scion. One could observe many such gems in most of the episodes.

Another interesting aspect of the show is the lead characters are more of a match made in heaven as they both are alike as well complement each other. Just they don't and can't get married in a traditional sense!

The biggest interesting aspect of the show IMO is the way story being told through a character who is so cynical about marriage in general but the one who is so happy and comfortable and having healthy relationship(s)!

Obviously, I like the show and I could talk a lot about the show in terms of how layered it is, how well written it is and how good the dialogues are. But enough about the good things.

Of course, the show does have some short comings, certain plots are too outlandish, certain twists are too predictable, but I think that is intentional and makes the show more watchable and enjoyable. Go do binge watch it.

கவிஞ்சரும், கவிஞ்ஜாயினியும்!

என்னுடைய 89 அழகிய ராட்சசிகள் கவிதை நூலை வாசித்ததில் இருந்து, இப்பொழுது எல்லாம் ஏன் கவித்துவமான கவிதைகள் எழுதுவதில்லை என்று வாசகிகள் மடல் மேல் மடல் எழுதுகிறார்கள்.

வாசகிகளா என்றால், வாசகிகள் எல்லாம் இல்லை. ஓரே ஒரு வாசகி சகதர்மிணி மட்டும் தான்! கவிஞ்சர் என்று ஆன பின் இவ்வளவு கூட மிகைப் படுத்த கூடாதா என்ன?

இப்படி கேட்டுக் கொண்டும்,  இந்த 96 அந்தாதி பாடலையும் , ரசம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்த போது காதல் ரசம் சிந்தும் பாடல்களை உங்கள்குழாயில் (YouTube)  (தமிழ் கவிஞ்சர்ரின் தமிழ் படுத்தல், சொல்ப அட்ஜ்ஸ்ட் மாடி)  கேட்டதன் விளைவாக நீ(ங்க) என்னடா (ங்க) எழுதுவது? நானே கவிஞ்ஜாயினி ஆகிவிடுகிறேன் என்று அவர் (கொஞ்சம் நானும்) எழுதிய குபீர்(பீர் எல்லாம் இல்லை)  கவிஜ , இதோ உங்கள் பார்வைக்காக!

(எச்சரிக்கை: கஜா புயல் காரணமாக வானம் மப்பும் மந்தாரமுமாக இருந்த சமயத்தில் புனையப்பட்டது)

Note to myself for now and future.

• More you wish strongly for things, the universe conspires to make it happen. Just wish for it very strongly
• Have strong faith that all things happen for a reason, for a very good reason and in the long run all things will turn out well and good
• Be humble and be patient. Sometimes, it is easy not to be respectful to others or lose cool, However it is never a good thing
• Be yourself and who your self should be defined by who you are rather than the circumstances
• Professional and Personal growth and development is all about, making a positive difference and creating an impact to the people around you

I firmly do believe in the above things and most of time, I do my best to live accordingly. However, there are times, I stray away from the principles. Hence the note as a self-reminder for now and future.

கதை 1:
ஒரு ஊர்ல ஒரு பிச்சைக்காரன் ஒரு வீட்டு முன்னாடி பிச்சை கேட்டானாம்.
மருமக,  சாப்பாடு எல்லாம் இல்ல, போயிட்டு வா அப்படின்னாளாம். கேட்டுகிட்டிருந்த மாமியார்,  மறுபடி பிச்சக்காரன கூப்பிட்டு, என்ன சொன்னா அப்படின்னு கேட்டாளாம். சாப்பாடு இல்ல அப்படின்னு சொல்றாங்க அம்மா அப்படின்னானாம்.

மாமியாருக்கு வந்ததே கோவம். அவ யார் சொல்றதுக்கு,  நான் சொல்றேன் சாப்பாடு இல்ல போ அப்படின்னாளாம்.

இந்த நிகழ்வுகளுக்கும் மேலே சொன்ன கதைகளுக்கும் எந்த சம்பந்தமும் இல்லை. இந்தியர்களின் தனிப்பட்ட விவரங்களை விற்பது, துஷ்பிரயோகம் செய்வதற்கு எல்லாம் இந்தியர்களான எங்களுக்கு தான் ஏகபோக உரிமை. மற்றவர்களுக்கு எல்லாம் இல்லை என்று வாசகர்கள் புரிந்துக் கொண்டால் அதற்கு கம்பேனி பொறுப்பல்ல பொறுப்பல்ல

Respect thy shareholder

Somewhere in Universe!

We are already in fourth quarter. Our results don't seem that promising. Our stock price may not reach the target and we may not able to award the dividends that we want for ourselves

Can't we ask our auditors to manage this for us?

Well, they have been banned to audit publicly listed companies. 

What, how did they ban them without asking us? Aren't we running the country?

We have to keep up the appearances, we will fix it in appeal but it would take some time.

Ah, what can we do? 

Can we announce we are doing something in block chain and crypto currency?

Are we a stalled startup to pivot in to them? 

Boss, Kodak's share price has tripled after they announced Kodak Coin!

What, they are still alive? I thought they were dead and bankrupt!

No, No!

Ah, If their price can triple, it should help us too! By the way, do we even know what it is? What if it fails or goes no where?

Don't worry, we will tell our new young boss will lead this initiative. It will show our next generation is innovative and is poised to lead us for generations to come!

Respect Thy Customer

We all have been bored to death by the cliche, Customer is King. Just as some kings are benevolent and some are malevolent, some customers are delightful to have and some are pain. More on that later. Irrespective of the nature of the customer, you just have to respect them. Simple. Period.

In my opinion, the biggest and worst form of customer abuse happens in Knowledge sharing sessions! For lack of better and appropriate word, I am calling them knowledge sharing sessions. If you are wondering, what exactly I am talking about, think of big time conferences and smaller events where there are speakers who are supposed to be thought leaders offering the expert opinions.

People come to the conferences and events to gain knowledge. They place an implicit trust that facts, opinions and learning shared by them are authentic. Of course there are certain things that have to be taken with a pinch of salt and context. Still, the speakers have a strong moral obligation to their audience who are their customers! Sometimes Audience pay a bomb to attend these talks, (even if it is company sponsored) they invest their time and effort, put up with not so good food at the events.
It is possible that the speakers don't get paid monetarily, still that doesn't justify the cavalier attitude speakers might have towards their customers, i.e the audience.

So, if you are going to be a speaker and would be talking to audience of twenty or two hundred or twenty thousand, please do the following

1. Do not accept a speaking engagement just because someone asked, or you have time or it would make you look good. Please do accept it because you are an expert and would know what you are talking
2. Research, Read, Research, Read, Repeat, Repeat
3. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare
4. Be cognizant about what you are talking, more especially with respect to data and numbers
5. During the Q& A
1. It is okay to say, you do not know
2. Do not beat around the bush 

The above might seem simple, in fact a given one. Strangely and surprisingly, some people just don't do it!

P.S

I really had to write this and get it out of my system. In the last one week alone, had to sit through some speakers who were brazenly quoting wrong numbers and dumb statements in an unabashed manner with utmost confidence. It was such an insult to audience. I really wish, I was brash enough to call them out publicly! 

காதலர் தின குறிப்புகள்!

• காதலர் தின கன்னராவியை எல்லாம் கொண்டாடியே தீர வேண்டும் என்ற கட்டாயம் எதுவும் இல்லை. நம் கலாச்சாரத்தில் சேர்த்தி இல்லை என்று சாய்சில் விட்டு விடலாம்
• கொண்டாடியே தீர வேண்டும் என்று முடிவு செய்தால், நெரிசல், கார் கொள்ளை (Surge) இவற்றை எல்லாம் கண்டு கொள்ளாமல், சிரமம் பார்க்காமல், பார்க், பீச், ஹோட்டல் என்று வெளியே கிளம்பி விடுவது புத்திசாலிகளுக்கு அழகு
• தனித்துவமாக, வித்தியாசமாக வீட்டில் கொண்டாடலாம் என்று கொள்கை இருந்தாலும், ஸ்விக்கி துணை என்று ஆன்லைனில் ஆர்டர் செய்வது உத்தமம். ஆர்டர் செய்ததை மறைக்க மெழுகுவர்த்தி எல்லாம் ஏற்றி வீட்டை விடுதியாக்க முயற்சிப்பது எல்லாம் வீண்வேலை!
• பிப்ரவரி மாதத்தில் நாட்கள் குறைவு என்ற காரணத்தால் மாதக்  கடைசி சற்றே முன்பாக வந்து விடுவதால் தானே வெளியே போகாமல் வீட்டிலேயே விழா கொண்டாடுகிறோம். பண்டிகை என்று நினைத்து மடியாக ஏன் நாமே சமைத்து, சேமித்து அசத்தக் கூடாது  என்று எண்ணம் வந்தால் நன்றாகத் தெரிந்த, அவ்வப்போது சமைக்கும் தோசை, மேகி போன்றவற்றையே சமைக்கவும். வேண்டுமென்றால் அதில் இதயம் ,அம்பு இத்யாதி ஆகியவற்றை வரைய முயற்சிக்கலாம். அதிக கேடு இல்லை. அதிகம் போனால், ஒரு கரண்டி மாவு. கடவுளுக்கு, காக்காவுக்கு என்று தாண்டி சென்று விடலாம்/
•  அதையும் தாண்டி காதலர் தினம்டா, கலக்குவோம்டா  மாஸ்டர்டா என்று கண்டதை எல்லாம் முயற்சிக்க கூடாது. இதை தான் தேவ பாஷையில் வினாசே காலே வீபரீத புத்தி என்கிறார்கள். அப்படி வரும் வீபரீத புத்திக்கு பிரயாசித்தமாக, செய்ததை பிரசாதம் போல் சாப்பிட்டு  மீதியை வாட்ச்மேனுக்கு கொடுத்து விடலாம். வாட்ச் மேன் விடும் சாபத்திற்கு வரும் கருட  புராண தண்டனையில் இருந்து தப்பிப்பதற்கு அப்படியே சிவ, சிவ என்றோ ராமா கிருஷ்ணா என்றோ சைவ/வைணவ வெறிக்கு தகுந்தவாறு சொல்லிக் கொண்டு படுத்து விட்டால் பண்டிகை, விரதம் மற்றும் புண்ணியம் என்று கூட்டிக் கழித்து கணக்கு சரியாக வந்து விடும். 
• அப்புறம் எவ்வளவு நேரமானாலும், ராமானுஜர் வழித்தோன்றலாக இதை எல்லாம் ஊருக்கும், வரும் பிற்கால சந்ததியினர் நன்மை கருதியும் இப்படி கல்வெட்டில் எழுதி வைத்து விடலாம்.
• மிக முக்கிய குறிப்பு: வருடத்திற்கு ஒரு முறை வரும் காதலர் தினம் எல்லாம் காதலிக்க நினைப்பவர்களுக்கும் காதலர்களுக்கும் தான். கல்யாணமானவர்களுக்கும் கூடி குடித்தனம் நடத்துபவர்களுக்கும் (Live-In Relationship) சமையல், வீட்டு வேலை எல்லாம் செய்து முடிக்கும் நாள் , ஏன்  சமையல், வீட்டு வேலையில் உதவி செய்யும் நாள் எல்லாமே காதலர் தினம் தான்!
• மிக மிக முக்கிய குறிப்பு: இவை எல்லாம் ஆண்களுக்கான குறிப்பு என்று நினைக்கும் ஆண்கள் சத்தியமாய் இந்த ஜென்மத்தில் காதலியுடன் காதலர் தினம் கொண்டாட மாட்டார்கள்!
