The fall and the rise of the Mercury

One fine day[no on a very damned, cursed day]  an IT professional, fell terribly sick, like never ever before in the history of his life. He was completely wonder stuck as he dint know when, where, why and how the thunderbolt struck him. You know these IT people go crazy like anything if they cant get to the bottom of it and find the root cause. To add fuel to the fire, he did even faint out even with out seeing any beauties! The Director and board members of his room felt his condition was worse than BP oil spill and needs professional medical attention.[Well you see,Most of his room mates educate the doctors on what the drugs actually do,what options they do have and they don't;)]

Of all things he fears the most,[well one among the very few] is getting injected. In spite of his initial protestations, they succeeded to drag him on to a doctor. Right in the beginning he set the terms and conditions, "NO INJECTION, I CAN'T RUN,YOU CAN'T CHASE". Out of his IT experience he definitely knows how to set the expectations right in the very beginning and to talk smooth.

The doctor  moved on with preliminaries asking age, measuring height and weight ,and started measuring the arterial pressure using sphygmomanometer, [yeah we average joes call that as blood pressure]now the doctor was much more worried than the person who accompanied the IT professional which was pretty clear from the frowns on his forehead.

The doctor was like, man this is more like a project that is turning towards red or for all i know it could have already turned red.

The IT professional asked the doctor will he mind checking his BP after 5 minutes of his meditation. Doctor with a little bit of reluctance agreed to it.

After five minutes, when the doctor measured, the mercury was raising so high the systolic measurement was between 135-145 and diastolic measurements was between 85-95. In plain terms he was traversing between prehypertension to hypertension.

There the doctor uttered those 4 words, the most overused words in the universe in all languages combined, may be next only to "I Love You" "IT'S A MEDICAL MIRACLE". Then, he shot me a barrage of questions What kind of meditiation is that? Where did you learn? Was it from that swamiji or this swamiji? Though he was caught in the act, they say his pranic healing was good? You attended his sessions? If not (them)him, Who else? How long have been practicing it? Can you teach me this? How much does it cost? How long will it take to learn? Is it difficult to learn, practice.

Wondering at the role reversal, who should be asking whom a lot of questions, decided to play along and said shall try to answer your questions.

"I started learning this some 3-4 years back. Gurus are no one special but very normal people like us.All I have to do is think about the salary i get, more especially the salary hike and some unfulfilled promises here and there. I might know some people who could even break this sphygmomanometer"

Alas, the doctor had the last laugh when he said , "Oh I should have asked your profession well in the beginning, you work in IT, that explains it.!"

1 message recieved

In the middle of the hectic day, he stole a moment from his monitor and was staring at this mobile.  A message "1 message recieved" was staring at him. Thinking it would be some stock update or junk ad messages, he took that  to check and delete that message.

To his surprise, it was from her. He never expected HER to message him, considering what happened over the week end, well he did expect but again not so soon.! With a great anticipation he opened it, and there it was, three words from her.  Three words from her to him in a mobile message.

He immediately called her up, confirmed that indeed it was her who had sent the message.

His joy knew no bounds and was showing up the message and with great enthusiasm was telling all his cubicle mates, she messaged him, she messaged him.

For people, who felt, whats the big deal on a message from her. He replied, this message, "please call me" from his 90 year old grandma matters more than the first mail sent by his 9 year old daughter.

Little Electronics, Little Programming, Little Philosophy

Once upon a time Long long ago in the history of engineering there was a Mr X, Miss Y and Madam Z.
They were all sitting together for viva-voce examination
Just some five to ten minutes before the following incident was about to happen, Madam Z was very much frustrated with the way, Mr X and Miss Y was answering and she offered them her 20 cents.
"Come on People, Grow up, be serious and answer questions as third year folks and not like some school kids. "
Madam Z felt, she has set Mr X and Miss Y right by her harsh words, Surprise was waiting to pounce upon her!or rather the shock of her life probably.
Madam Z popped up a very easy question, to level of school to the so called mature college guys and girls, what is the difference between Analog devices and Digital Devices?
Mr X, being a gentleman, passed on the easy question to the Miss Y, Hey remember ladies first okie!
Miss Y started answering about analog signals and digital signals, Mr X being a good guy, always ready to help, corrected her, "hey maam is asking about devices."
Madam Z, thinking to herself, Miss Y is pathetic, at least Mr X, is getting to his senses, "you can answer yourself. "
Mr X replied, "Analog devices operate on analog signals, Digital Devices operate on Digital Signals.
Mr X finally got his revenge and set the Madam Z right. !
It would have taken all the prayers and blessings of not just his mom but also his forefathers, for him to come unscathed out of the viva voce.
At least that was the assumption Mr X until the day he meet with his destiny!

Fast forward to Today
Mr X true to his form of a management guy, asks questions for which he doesn't know the answers.
There was a poor soul[is he really a poor soul?] which got an interview scheduled due to Mr X.
Mr X before the night of interview, felt a strong urge to help the poor soul and conducted a mock interview.
It started off like this, "What is the difference between inline function and friend function?"
The poor soul, enthusiastically replied, "Inline function uses the keyword inline and friend function uses the keyword friend"
Now i need not say that was the end of the mock of interview.
Mr X finally had the taste of his very own medicine.
Mr X was heard blabbering to himself,"I know, I know, "history repeats", "what you sow is what you reap?" "Life is so cruel!"

Modern Markandeya Story

Once upon a time, long long ago in India there was a saint couple who did not have kids.(those were the times where saints could get married legally) They prayed very fervently to god that they wanted a kid. God decided that he will bless them with a kid. So he appeared in front of them and offered two choices.
One, you could have a kid who can live for 100 years, but he will not be handsome,he will not be intelligent, in short good for nothing.
If not you could have a kid who will be handsome intelligent(you know just like me) but can live only for 16 years,
The parents chose a kid who will live for 16 years. The intelligent kid became a vry strong disciple of god shiva, prays to him, on the day of his last day, he hugs the lingam.
Yama comes tries to take him away with the lingam, Lord shiva gets angry, threatens yama, blesses margandaya to live forever!

Cut to twentieth Century, There were two kids who were destined to be silicon valley legends.
God appeared to them offered two choices.
One could have a OS, which will be used by many people, many developers will write applications for it, but it will not look cool, it will crash several times,in short make the lives of the people who use it very miserable but still will live with the pain and may end up as the richest man in the world
The other could have a OS, which will not be used by many people, not many developers to write application for it, but the coolest, stable OS bringing a child like wonder experience to the people who use it and may end up as a man who made a postive difference and changed the way people live forever.
Now If you havent figured out what i am talking about, you are obviously living in pain, never knowing the feeling of "child like wonder"

For a very long time recently, I am back to square one.Yeah,I have been reading nothing else than tamil fiction. One such novel that held my attention was Dollar Marumagal (daughter in law) by Sudha Murthy. None else than the wife of NRN, the co-founder of Infosys.

It was initially written in kannada in the name, "dollar sosai" not dosai, sosai which in kannada means daughter in law. It is also a text book in mysore university. It has also been translated in telugu, hindi and marathi. Even it has come has teleserial in Zee. Hope our Radhikaa doesn't comes as the heroine either in sun or kalaignar tv

Our hero is the ambitious younger son of a middle class family with an elder brother who leads a contented life. The story begins with, hero(technically speaking, he cant be called hero!!To know why keep reading) hearing a sweet voice in the train, get to meet the girl, sacrifices his berth to her due to a confusion in the ticket allotment by the clerk(which company wrote the software for the railway ticketing system?) ends up staying in the house of the girl, comes to know her life is filled with grief, the girl takes care of him during his arm fracture. Well, what else he falls in love with that girl. (Poor hero doesnt have guts like NRN, who proposed the sudha, the author herself)

In the mean while, he gets a job in TCS,(does the skipping, earns a lot more in dollars. Being a NRI,He gets married to a girl from a rich family during his vacation to india and takes her back to US.

If you havent guessed, the girl with who he has fallen in love will end up as wife to your elder brother, either you havent watched any of the balachander movies or you havent been reading this post with your fullest concentration.(You gotta concentrate in Reading comprhension section, if you are appearing to CAT this year)

Well, the story is not all about a guy who lost his lady love being ambitious and chasing dollars. It is not all about just another day in today's IT techie life, though it portrays it. It is all about the knowledge transfer(odyssey of meeting with long term people) that happens to a mother to be precise the mother in law during a short term visit of the with two daughter in laws, one at onsite(america) and the other at offshore(india).

She gets to interact with different types of NRI's hearing about their "ABCD's (American Born Confused Desi's) as well as the ground reality about her dollar daughter in law.she gets an insight about, People not interfering in other personal lives, man and woman sharing the domestic chores in an equal fashion, Festivals being postponed to week ends and racism.
At one instance in the novel, the mother in law travels alone in a less crowded bus. When she goes and sit near a old lady of her age, the old lady moves away and sits in another seat. The mother in law compares this to an incident where she sacrificed a seat to travel in a crowded corporate bus, when a sweeper woman sat near her. (what else could be an eye opener, even though it could be a land of opportunities irrespective of caste, it is a land with difference to color)

I wouldn't be surprised, if the novel is nothing else but a collection of the account of true stories several NRI's.

This is not something written in mind to act as detrimental effect to avoid the long term guys making a skip(pun intended). as well as to paint a bleak picture that migration and settling down at US is dangerous. It is not to emphazize,"east or west, home is best"

Still,I strongly feel that it is a must to be read by all the software guys, girls and their parents as well as non-software people.(Because everybody lives in illusion) hence a post in english about a tamil novel. (I remember seeing the same title even in english.)

Campus Interview

Mamu Arrears
படிக்கிறப்போ proper-a perfect-a படிக்கிலேன்னா இப்படித்தான் என்ற அக்காவின் advice,
all the best என்று கூட வந்தவரின் வாழ்த்து,
