That Day to This Day

More than a decade and half ago,There was this guy crossing a gate.

It was the same gate he had been crossing for the previous seven years.

That day was different, Instead of some elderly person accompanying him, he was accompanying a little one. It was his turn to be an elderly person.

When his turn to came to meet the headmistress, without any preamble, She said, you should come with your parents to collect your transfer certificate.

He replied, No Sister. I have already collected them.I am here to admit my sister.

Few years back, yet again, the guy and not so small girl  almost went through the same ritual of crossing a gate. It was a sheer coincidence it happened to be an yet another same gate which he had been passing through.

Fast forward today, the little one is almost woman. Today she did cross another gate in to a jungle all alone, leaving the guy behind. All in a moment of the flash. Wondering what was that in the mind, heart and the eyes of the guy at that moment?

The entire time from the first gate crossing to today seems to have passed in a moment of flash...

p.s
When i first started writing poems, One of my manager gave me a pretty good advice on how to write poems. Yeah, i was lucky enough to have managers who always let me do what ever i wanted to do and support me the whole nine yards. Coming back to the advice, it was something like "Never state explicitly what you want to state. Let the reader interpret it on his own. If different people interpret it differently then you are a darn good poet". Now thinking back, it also seems like, he was talking about "How to deal with clients?"  Connecting this post and his point on poems,I am not sure does it makes me a good writer, if different people interpret the writing in different ways. Let me state this explictily and simply. It was the first day of my sissy to Office. I was just reminiscing the day i took her to admit in the kindergarten. :P :D Now you also know, i never listen to my managers ;)

Four rules for your First job

1.Lit a fire under your ...
After a long and arduous journey of pre-school to college, when you land up in your first job, you might think, you have reached the end of tunnel.
Remember there is no end of tunnel and there is no light.
Above all the journey has just begun.
Be ambitious. Be goal oriented. Have a plan.
Ensure the fire under your bellies do not fade out but add fuel to that fire and lit it under your ...

2.Find a Good Guru
No college, No course prepares you for the real job. When you land up in your job, it is nothing else but a dark and dangerous jungle.
With out a proper guide to show you the way you would really be lost. By the time you, you figure out your way in jungle, you would have been eaten alive by predators.
With out a guide, you just dont stand a chance.

3.Pray for an ambitious manager
Ensure you work for a manager who is ambitious to the nth degree.
It is more like a ladder where you all are in queue and your manager is on top.Until and unless he moves a step ahead you will never be able to climb ahead. If he doesn't climbs up, the only way to charge ahead is to change your ladder.

4.Meaure your progress with numbers
You might hear some wise #$% remarks such as, "It is the time to learn. You should not be focussing on money. In the long run all things will get even out"
When the companies worry about customers rather than profits, when the companies worry about employers rather than operating margins. When people stop drooling at Asin, Anushka, Tamanna and Trisha, because they too get old one day and will look ugly.
You too could stop worry about your bonus, hike and the money you make.

Make no mistake, if your numbers dont grow, it just shows you are just not growing.

Update:
This space will be updated shortly with "Purpose in life" [Contribution from some one who has taught me most of the tech stuff and most importantly the way of thinking and what not]
p.s
All the above are based on the presumption that you are smart, logical, quick thinker with superb social skills. It also means you know your craft and is too good at it. To sum up you should have potential. Alas, Potential alone will not take you anywhere. Then, the title is a misnomer. It applies not just to your first job, when ever you enter a new role, new team, new department, new company, in short any new jungle!

p.p.s
The above post was written quite sometime(4-5 months) back with the intention to be published under a totally different circumstances. It could be clearly seen in the refences to Asin, Tamanna and Trisha rather than say Hansika, Shruthi or Richa ;). Neverthless it had been in draft section for quite sometime, i thought will let this see the light of the day.

How will you determine, whether a number is prime or not?”

By dividing it by zero!”

How did i do my Interview?”

2.அன்றும் இன்றும் ”C code for average of n numbers” கூட தெரியாதவன் தான் நான்!

Purpose of the powder

Of all things that puzzle me a lot, the one that puzzles me the most is the purpose of the powder. Talcum powder that is.

Before we go further, Please note the color white and fair will be used interchangeably in the Indian context. Also remind yourself brownish and wheatish are also considered as white, again in the Indian context!

Is it make you to look fair?

If you are fair, already you are white, and why to apply more white over it? Isn't it more like painting white over white?

If you are dark, again no powder is powerful enough to make the dark go away! Won't applying powder make it look like a white coat painted over the dark? Doesn't applying powder makes it obvious that you are dark rather than masking the darkness?

Disclaimer(s)
1.This post is applicable for guys and girls.
2.I don't think i am fair or white.
3.I don't think beauty lies in the colors.
4.I don't use powder and haven't as far as i know. My Mom says that i was using it a lot when i was a kid.Considering my small face and small hands, hardly i wouldn't have used more than an 100gram talcum powder for my whole life.
5.I don't have anything against the talcum powder companies or the models who come in those ads.
6.Please add any other disclaimer that i might have missed

Update as heard from a powder expert and others:
1.Powder is used as fragrant sweat absorbant
2.It shadows the black spots and makes the skin even
3.Also helps oily skinned people

Agent Smith and Automation

I like Google News very much.
I use it very much.
I also very much like the changes they are making nowadays.

I also believe, I know a thing or two about automation to make a comment on it.
At the same time, I am of the belief, Never send a machine to do a man's job as against the Agent Smith in The Matrix and the very best folks who taught me the automation [Agent Smith: Never send a human to do a machine's job]

My belief applies to way too many job functions and one among them is running a news site. A news site has to be run by a man but not by the machine.

In Google News, I have seen wrongly placed photos across news snippets. News at wrong sections i.e news about health in entertainment and all that still the below picture is the ultimate thing i have ever come across.

This where the links take you, Here and here

Are you with me or with Agent Smith?

Tribute to Steve Jobs

Australian Tamil Broadcasting Corporation's Australia's Tamil Radio paid a special tribute to Steve Jobs.

Here is the recording of the Live show.

Yeah, that squeaky little voice belongs to me!

A very special thanks should go to Chokkan for recommending me, with out him this wouldn't have been possible.

An equally special thanks to Kanapraba for having me too as a guest in his show :)

You could hear the radio live here

Bidding Adieu

First Review of My Writing

It's more than 5 months, I started writing the biography of steve jobs here [22nd week column was published today]

I was told, it was popular and getting good hits but me being a cynic[Ahem] took it with a pinch of salt.

Today I came across this and was quite surprised to see a first third party review of my writing :)

It indeed made my day though :)

Amazing Airtel

Yeah, it was me the word AMAZING in front of Airtel. I am neither stoned nor my account has been hacked.

Last week sometime, just like that my broadband stopped working. Even the Phone went dead. I was not sure how to call the customer. Some good soul suggested call 121.

Calling 121 from your mobile takes you to the mobile complaint center but not to the broadband center.

Surprisingly when called 121, rather than giving me the above sermon, he just gave me 044 44444198 to call and press 1 2 3 to reach the customer care directly.

Again the customer care guy was so prompt, gave me the ticket number and the resolution time. He was even frank enough to say, the executive will come only by ten and not earlier.

The very next day even before i ran out of patience the service executive called me, asked me for the landmark and came in no time.

Fixed it quick, tested and went back. As luck would have it, as soon as he was gone, the broadband alone stopped working.

When i called the exchange directly, rather than the customer care, they were kind enough to accomadate me and fixed it back quick, again. Very well, he could have asked me to raise or reopen a ticket or could have given me lame excuses.

It was amazing customer service, I would say.

May be the Airtel had gotten its act together still there is something that deserves our attention.

It is not the CEO, it is not the grandiose vision and values that lies in the decorated plaques in offices. It is not the million dollar marketing campaign. It is the guy at the bottom of the pyramid, who interacts with the customer directly day in day out makes all the difference to brand, adds value, leads to the customer satisfaction, sustains the very survival of the company.

Earlier Airtel goof ups can be seen here, here and here.

Go Government Go Green

Either some Ramamirtham has definitely taken a peek at this post by Ramesh or they have learnt a thing or two from their foreign trips.Corporate or non-corporate, there are gonna be many jholna bags or sacks carried around by Rajalakshmi's.

Yeah, it's official in Chennai.

Effective from Sep 1,As per the Govt Directive,For each and every plastic bag you use and depending on the size of it, you have to pay either Re.1/3/5.

Well, yours truly ended up paying Re.1

On hindsight, I could have stuffed few things in my pocket and walked around carrying an AXE in my hand. I just did not want to risk the axe effect to take effect attracting attention from onlookers other than the PYT.

N.B
The words Rajalakshmi and Ramamirtham were coined by Ramesh and he rightfully owns the copyright to them.

Just Business! Really?

"It's just business, nothing personal"
Thanks to the movie, "The Godfather". It has been uttered several million times by several people on several occasions.

Is there any truth to it?
Do people really mean it?
Can it be just business and nothing personal?
I say, BIG BULLSHIT.

Why do you even go to office? To get a pay cheque at the end of month. Isn't this personal? Where is the just business thing in it?
It's not just you. For everyone, it's just personal business.

How can one be successful or good at what they do with out being passionate about what they do? Isn't being passionate a personal thing?

How can one be a successful salesman, if he is not personally convinced with what he sells?
How can one be a successful CEO, if he does not personally believes in the company?

Well, guess what? It does not only apply to business world or petty causes even to greater societal national causes.

Ever wonder how India got it's independence from the British raj?
Do you think going all gung-ho against the establishment which threw you out of a train from the first class despite having a valid ticket was just business and nothing personal?

Success is Personal

My brother cleared his higher secondary exams.
Hundreds of thousands clear it each and every year. What is the big deal about it?
Well, Yeah its definitely a big deal considering he is suffering from ....

This is not something straight from a Robin Sharma or a Stephen Covey preaching paradigm shift or about being in other person's shoes or anything related to it.

It was a real time big time embarassment message conversation happened few years ago between me and my friend.

Reflecting upon it and remembering might reinforce the lessons of  Paradigm Shift
Thinking from other person's perspective. Thinking twice before shooting off your mouth or firing a mail or message. Or many such things.

Rather than all the above, I feel the most important lesson is "Everyone is a successful person in their very own right"

Not only Sachin and Shahrukh are successful, but also Sam and Suppan

Success is not all about churning few best sellers or winning oscars or hitting 100 centuries.

Success is all about creating new horizons for yourself, going beyond your boundaries, taking a shot to design your destiny against all your odds.

If only you can scale up to a three storey building from an hut; If only you turn out to be a biggest purchaser of a store, where you were shooed away;where you were turned away for not paying up the credits, then you are the Ambani in your own right.

The benchmark to define Success is unique and personal.

Success comes in all sizes. Pick yours

How they got Osama and how it got me

There are few articles that brings a chill to your bones. Hair raising. Every one also know Newyorker is famous for such insightful revealing articles.
This one is beyond adjectives.

The way the story is presented, the transition it makes from the landing in Pakistan to the way it was planned and going back to the place where the action took and the follow up is just awesome. More especially the closure.

Well, any one who has practiced his craft of writing could churn out one like this, but when you consider the amount of effort that would have involved in groundwork. Finding the right people, getting them to talk, verifying the information offered, making sense of all of them and presenting them in such an interesting style. WOW WOW.

I was(and am) never a big fan of Obama. I have always felt, Americans should have voted for Mccain for he has really given a lot to the nation. I was surprised to read, Mccain wasn't appreciative of Obama's promise.

Now I sincerely wish Americans would vote back Obama just for getting Geronimo

Rules of negotiation

  1. You have something interesting to be offered to the other party
  2. The other party may be genuinely interested in accepting your offer
  3. Both will agree to a fair loss for the gain.
Even if one of the rules could not be met, there is no point of negotiation.

If, with out following all the three rules, some one calls the conversation, a negotiation then

One or both the parties don't know what negotiation mean.
[OR]
It is possible, one of them is takin the other for a ride

The moment, I saw Skype was acquired by Microsoft, just couldn't believe it. I was wondering why would they even do it.
The more i read about it, I was eager to write out an article and send it here
As usual, my usual laziness, sleep and lame reasons like work load helped towards procrastinating the wrap up of the article. [In spite of having the hints, notes all dusted up]
Even was wondering, is my itouch jinxed? [Few other articles for which i made notes for on that itouch never saw the print!]
Finally reading this amplified my guilt. This comment really did inspire me to finish up the article.
This page is due to the above mentioned folks :) Thanks a ton :)

Security or Stupidity

I do know the online world is not safe. Accounts do get hacked, information and money gets stolen. Day in day out the people try to make their system more secure and several layers of protection. In no way we are gonna have something fool proof and secure. Every system will have shortcomings and flaws. period.

I do not advocate that we should not embark on the journey of improvements and enhancements stating that however it will be broken, so why enhance it in the first place. Still, what irks me is the way how people do it.

It is given that any good security system should have more than one form of authentication, in terms of combinations or what ever it takes.

In terms of banking, it happens to be login pass word, transaction password, along with your card info.

Off late for any online computer based transactions, they have brought in the mobile factor, which i would say pure madness.

In ICICI, after giving your user ID and password, it would prompt for a OTP or one time password. A six digit number would have been messaged to your mobile number and you should use that to login.

What if i don't have a mobile?
What if there is no battery in my mobile?
What if, I am in a place where there is no service?
What if i hadn't paid my bills and all sort of my outgoing and incoming is blocked and I am trying the Internet banking to pay my bills?
Above all, do they know that messaging is no reliable form of communication. At least to the best of my knowledge there is no guarantee that if i send a message to some one, it will reach with out fail. There by there is no guarantee that I could access the services that i am entitled to!
P.S
once with SBI had a tough time, in transferring some money back to hometown and was irritated to board the bus to hand deliver the money. Even there the some problem, while transferring apart from transaction password, a 6 digit number will be sent to your mobile. which cant be typed from keyboard but clicked from the virtual key pad on screen. By the time the message comes the session would have gone expired as i was inactive. Those security consultants should be sued.

Tough Times

Sometimes life could be tough, very tough. Lightning could strike you twice but you may not have the liberty to swear like John Mclane and say, Same shit happens to the same man twice" or ask yourself or any one "Why Me? Why Me?"

Tough times definitely test you a lot, they help to realize, "Who you are really?" not only to the world but more importantly to yourself. Either they bring out the satanic nature or the saint.

If one could beat the crap out of tough times and get out of it safely smelling like roses, the pleasure is the real bliss. If it beats the crap out of you and you get out of it smelling otherwise, the pain is a real curse.

Tough times could turn out to be either be divine or diabolical.

I could go on and on the dual nature of the tough times, but in my time as a IT techie, I have learnt a trick or two. "Thou shall not reinvent"

I hereby quote Dickens, who, I feel has already captured,  which holds true for most of the moments in our tumultuous life.

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only."

-Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens

Still this too holds true!

Leadership (Re) Defined

Sometime back, I wrote What the heck is leadership?

Seems that day, I had a selective amnesia, a momentary lapse in to loss of senses and forgot the definition of leadership taught to me by a much wiser (May be younger) kid on a very special circumstance. What he taught me was, A person who gets things done by his charisma, by his presence, by driving others hard is a manager but  definitely not a leader. A leader is the one who make things happen even in his absence by inspiring people.
How many leaders or people do we know who could pull off this kind of leadership?

After reading Line of Fire, the autobiography of  Pervez Musharraf, more especially the military coup by his troops, I would say he fits the bill rather than any one.

Why so and how so?
Musharraf was on his way back from Colombo in a commercial airliner unaware that he has been dismissed from the post of army chief. In his absence, with out his guidance or coordination or command, his generals carry out the coup, dismiss Nawaz Sharif, and ensure Musharraf's plane lands safely.

Of course, all this is allegedly based on the self account of Musharraf, which need not be true.

Of course, the destiny played its part where the flight got delayed here and there and with out those delays history as we know could have been very different as the timing played a crucial factor.

Of course, Musharraf and his generals would have considered the possibility of his dismissal brainstormed, played strategic war games on this scenario.

Of course, one could argue, the loyalty of Musharraf's generals should have been towards the country but not to a man called Musharraf and hence Musharraf has failed miserably.

Still, think about it, his generals are not sure, will he even land safely?  They could have simply kept quiet, saying no commander, no commands so no coup. Why should they risk their very lives and conduct a coup which may go wrong?

Still a bloodless coup occured which overthrew the government in less than four hours. [May be Musharraf later chided his generals, "Why the hell it took so long?]

So how many of us could take a vacation and be confident that your team could carry on even with out you? [No, I am not talking about how dispensable you are!]

P.S
Thanks to the KID who taught me what leader ship is?
Thanks to NHM for their special discount sale.
Thanks to friends who have listened to my rant on this.

The first, "Of course" scenerio mentioned above also did reinforce my faith, belief, philosophy and guiding principle of tough times:
Rather than fretting and feeling bad when things dont go your way or  starting to sulk for silly things, accept things as they happen, because, everything happens for a reason and for a very good reason.

Couldn't resist thinking, Was Gandhi, ever a leader, more especially after reading the pen ultimate paragraph here
Considering the special circumstance then, this definition of leadership was never far away from my mind, but off late it has been haunting me with high intensity...

Enlightenment

Ever wondered what  conversation does a guy who holds a phone glued to his ear has, while his lips too are glued to each other...well,  just his very own lips!

Hmm, he is just listening to a monologue, which we all mistake to be a dialogue.

So what is the monologue is all about?

Well, to name a few it could range across any one of the following or all of them ;)
  • Reasons for suddenly disappeared from being online.
  • How the desire to cook fish curry vanished because mom started cooking?
  • Who are all the friends, who are dieting, how they are dieting and why they are dieting?
  • Why dieting does not serves any purpose in the long run?
  • Why today mom's hand bag is being carried to office rather than personal handbag?

Steve is Back

And he really did kick some ass.
Business press haven't learnt their lessons on Steve Jobs  from his past history.

Once Bloomberg worte his obituary when he was very much alive.

A month back, when he took his third leave of absence, business press was all over him bidding good bye to him forever. We also had some doctors who could diagnose patients just by looking at a picture and predict the death. And again business press did eat that...

All these inspite of having seen him rise like a phoenix out of ashes, more than once!

I would say, he rose out of ashes once again yesterday to launch the sequel of his third post-PC blockbuster product, iPad 2.

With the display of his magical formulaic Steve Notes[like starting with the updates, taking a dig at the competitors  by calling them copy cats and misquoting Samsung, well at least i think it was delibrate] he shut all the mouths [or should i say open mouthed] and showed them he isn't dead, at least for now!

As he once remarked, Death is the biggest invention but it is yet to discover him!

R.S.S
